In the plant world, and folk traditions at large, we see the whole and work with it. The shadow + the light are honored and the value of both are seen. In herbalism and in healing embracing opposition, honoring the complexities of a body system & the plant world can simply start a healing for the individual. Especially, when the individual begins a soft and true noticing of their own lived experience. Working with plants can enhance body and spirit work treatments by allowing plants to work inside out.

A handful of years ago I stumbled upon Rusty Moon Botanicals while walking around the Columbia City neighborhood just before the sun brushed the horizon one late spring evening. I've found nature to be a keen ally and enjoy working with and endlessly learning from our medicinal plant allies. I continually build Root Down Healing Arts small apothecary called Rusty Moon Botanicals. Under the Rusty Moon Botanical name I provide lustrous empowering mists, salves, massage oils, specialized pelvic bowl herbal steams and genital soaks, personalized flower essences, tinctures, elixirs and Rainforest Remedies formulated by Dr. Rosita Arvigo DN and decanted by me.
With all remedies in the decanting process, I follow the moon cycles and use prayer (or healing words) throughout the six week period to honor the plants and their medicine for quality and potency.
As with many traditional cultures, including the Maya people, there’s a recognition and honoring of the sacred within all forms of life. To be a steward of the land, honoring plants, trees, stones, animals and humans treading on the earth. This belief resonates and dwells deep within me.
Ethically foraged: when there’s abundance I ask plants and wait for response before gathering. Sometimes this means not gathering, and especially when there’s too little or plants are just babies I let them be to grow.
In the past I’d seasonally forage to find what’s in nature’s stock. And try to follow the moon cycles~ when it’s optimal to plant, pick and gift back. My current focus is softly churning now towards garden cultivation.
My products are handmade with love and with organic ingredients from the wild, my garden or a mindful organic company.
Rosita spent twelve years as Don Ejilio Panti’s apprentice in Maya medicine. The training included leaving his ancient abdominal massage techniques and basic treatment protocols for his patients. In 1990 Rosita met Miss Hortence Robinson, a well- known herbal midwife who taught her more about the techniques and their benefits to pregnant women.
There is so much Rosita has given throughout the years to communities she helped to form Ix Chel Tropical Research in 1993 to provide traditional healers a local voice and international forum. She was a part of the Ethnobotany project bringing together traditional healers and their medicinal plants to help the National Cancer Institute research on AIDS and cancer and sprouted the Bush Medicine Camp for kids in 1998 to explore medicinal plants, ethnobotany and traditional healing. They also have gaggles of fun!

In session I use my handmande botanical Femimist Mists to support the etheric body and room in clearing. There are many branches to the Ceiba tree of Maya spiritual healing and handmade Femimist Mists support those noticeable and subtle changes. Rusty Moon Botanicals Femimists are simple and effective for day to day space, spirit and session clearing. These lustrous misty waters are made with prayer, essential oils and moon water.
Wild foraged medicinal plant and home-grown garden infusions are used in every session. My medicinal oils are prepared with love and prayer~ while gathering them, during solar + crockpot infusion and pouring their rich potency into glass for you. My methods of making are solar infusion when weather allows and crockpot. Typically, the carrier oil is organic avocado oil.
The main difference between essential oils + medicinal oil infusions (or “medicinal oils”) is that essential oils are prepared through distilling the fresh plant material to extract the volatile portions of the plant. The oils are a small yield but a rich and potent powerhouse. Alchemically, the essential oils are considered 1/3 of the plant and considered the soul of the plant. Meanwhile, an infused oil is drawing off a broader spectrum of the plant’s biochemical profile and can grab parts of plant that otherwise get lost in distillation. For example the medicinal allies, plantain and calendula, make for a more resourceful infusion than an essential oil. I find medicinal oils to be vibrant and in action radiate their healing outwards in looping fashion. Almost enveloping the aura first, then body and deeper into tissues as it’s absorbed.
A flower essence is an infusion of fresh flowers, bark or other part of plant in pure water. There are many variations of Flower essences, I use Bach flower mother essences direct from England, seasonally I create a few of my own wild foraged flower essences and others flow from Tree Frog Farm on Lummi Island.
The Alaska Flower Essence Project reports that essences "... contain the unique vibrational qualities of the individual plant used and offer a new way to access the healing qualities of the plant kingdom." Flower essences are soul medicine and resonate with our frequencies, shifting things on a subtler plane.
All flower essences Bach (or otherwise) work in conjunction with medications, homeopathy, other herbs and are safe for everyone, including children, pregnant people, older adults, animals, plants and gemstones.
"Stand up for your roots, because the forest is worth more standing than destroyed."
- Rainforest Remedy company motto
The Arvigo Institute Rainforest Remedies are formulated by Dr. Rosita Arvigo, DN, through what she calls is “Salvage Botany.” That is, the herbs and roots are harvested from uncultivated areas already scheduled for clearing and development. The herbs are always gathered as prescribed by ancient Mayan traditions, traditional prayers by herb collectors in the traditional ways. For over 10 years Dr. Arvigo, an herbalist and Doctor of Naprapathy, apprenticed and studied with a highly respected Maya shaman and healer, Don Elijio Panti in Belize. Since 1992 these formulas have been made in Belize and sold in the United States, Central America and Europe. All Rainforest Remedies are formulated by Dr. Rosita Arvigo and made by me following the moon cycles and use of prayer (or healing words) throughout the six week period to honor the plants and their medicine for quality and potency. All tinctures made by Rainforest Remedies compliment one another and can be used conjunction without complications.

Herbal medicine is for every body and I want to make it accessible to all. For the moment, my plant remedies are for ATMAT clients, current clients, and distance clients after consult. I speak more specifically about herbal remedies, tinctures, plants for pelvic bowl steams and genital soaks in session during intake and after client receives bodywork. A couple reasons for this practice are:
~ my understanding of client’s experiences deepens both after intake + after client receives; clarifying for me client’s remedy + dosage.
~ It’s my trust in the plant medicine & commitment to clients + their health to follow up. To hear how clients feel, what’s working, what isn’t so together we can establish tailored treatment for bodywork and plant medicine.
Many of my herbal remedies relate to the ATMAT work; digestive wellness, reproductive health, blood sugar care, bitters, iron boost, reduction in scar tissue and muscle tension.
One of the oldest written records of plants being used as medicine is in India in 700 B.C.. Humans have looked to the natural world as a means of support + kinship, caution + respect through ceremony, healing our physical bodies, in addition to aspects of our emotional, spiritual and mental bodies since nearly the beginning of time in most cultures. The vital essence or spirit of a plant often relates directly to its’ therapeutic effect and taps into healing a fractured landscape. From my marrow I am drawn to the magic, mystery and science of medicinal plants and their world.
I appreciate the endless spiraling, learning, that unfolds each time I step into nature. Picking up the same plant, we might each time learn something new. I look to healers in the community that have come before me, that have been at the gates and through them, anything they wish to share I honor.
Similar to gemstones and the granite stones, wild plants are some of my dearest + oldest teachers and friends. As though I’ve known them in another time, I’m grateful to have another turn around the sun learning with them.
In respect and always in aw of the wild plants and their generous givings, I offer their wisdom to you to contribute to a fuller spectrum of joy and well-being.
